(Tim & Danielle - Total Distance: 9 miles)

At
3,993 feet, Sandwich Dome is the highest mountain in New England
under 4,000 feet. It is one of the 100 highest peaks in the
northeast and since it is under 4,000 feet fewer hikers are found
here. We
decided to do a loop hike that would take us over Noon and
Jennings peaks before we reached the summit of Sandwich Dome. Most
of the trail up was a steady ascent. We passed some big
boulders and eventually came to a section of trail that was
almost vertical before we finally reached the rocky ledge of Noon
Peak. |

Noon
Peak has some fantastic views of the Tripyramid's
and Waterville Valley.
After a quick break we continued on our way. The trail
between Noon and Jennings Peak's was easy and peaceful. We passed
some Indian Pipe
and found a ledge with a nice view of Sandwich
Dome and Jennings
Peak. Then before we knew it, we arrived at the spur path to
Jennings Peak. This trail had a rather steep section just before
the top. Once we reached the summit we took a break and enjoyed
the view toward Sandwich
Dome. |
The
path between Jennings Peak and Sandwich Dome was a lush carpet of ferns.
Once we reached the summit we found a nice view of Waterville
Valley. We could also see Mt.
Washington, the Tripyramids,
and the ridge
we followed for our hike. A few other hikers joined us on the
summit and we all shared stories of the hikes we have done. On our
way back down the sun came out and cast some interesting
shadows on the trail. For the remainder of the hike we
followed the Drakes Brook trail and were pleased to find that most
of the trail was almost flat and followed the stream all the way
to the parking lot. |
